The Red Paddle Co Sport Plus 14′ board is designed for paddlers seeking both speed and versatility. Positioned between Red Paddle Co’s 14′ Voyager touring board and the 14′ Elite race board, it aims to provide a balance of performance and practicality. Red Paddle Co provided their new 14 ft Sport Plus board for testing, known as one of their fastest paddleboards, designed for exploring and long distances. The board was taken to the Lake District for a review and first impressions.
Despite its size, the board is remarkably lightweight. It is constructed from Red Paddle Co’s MSL 800 material, weighing less than 24.25lbs while remaining strong enough to handle pressures over 22 PSI.
Initial testing took place in windier and choppier conditions than expected, making the board feel unstable at first. Due to its narrower design, there was a learning curve, and leg fatigue set in more quickly compared to wider boards. However, after about an hour of use, stability improved, and the board’s speed and performance became more enjoyable.
After spending approximately two and a half hours on the board, some key observations emerged. The primary drawback is its reduced stability compared to wider boards, requiring some adjustment. Additionally, it lacks rear luggage storage, which may be a consideration for those using it for touring.
On the positive side, the 14ft Sport+ board is extremely lightweight and glides effortlessly through the water. It maintains momentum well, often requiring back paddling to slow down.
The front deck offers ample space for a deck bag, making it convenient for carrying a drone, camera, or additional gear. Bungee cords provide extra storage for smaller items. Another notable feature is the centrally positioned action camera mount, which allows for better symmetry in footage compared to models with off-center mounts.
This board is positioned between Red’s Voyager touring board and the 14 ft Elite race board, combining speed and long-distance capability while still offering some storage options. It is well-suited for those who enjoy exploring at a faster pace without sacrificing too much practicality. Overall, the board delivered an impressive performance and provided valuable insight into the new Red Paddle Co Sport Plus 14′ x 28″ model.
