SUPboarder Review The New Red Paddle Co Sport+ Inflatable SUPs

Reuben from SUPboarder walks us through the new Sport+ range from Red Paddle Co. The 12’6″ x 30″ x 4.75″ Sport+ is now available for order. As is the new 14′ x 28″ x 6″ Sport+. There is limited stock, get your order in ASAP.

In this review, we’ll compare the new Sport Plus boards to the original Sport Range, helping you understand where these boards fit within the Red Paddle Co lineup. By the end, you should have a good idea if these boards are suitable for you.

The Sport Plus range includes two new boards: the 12’6″ by 30″ at 4.7″ thick and the 14′ by 28″ at 6″ thick. These are contrasted with the original Sport Range’s options, which include similar dimensions but with varying thicknesses.

Discussing the differences between the Sport and Sport Plus ranges, the thickness of the boards plays a significant role in the paddling experience. Thinner boards offer a more connected feel to the water, especially for mid to lighter weight riders, whereas thicker boards provide more stiffness and can carry more weight. The Sport Plus range adjusts these thicknesses to cater to different paddler weights and preferences.

The new boards also come with standard features like the Titan pump, a highly efficient, award-winning pump, and the well-made ATB Transformer backpack. The boards themselves feature central handles, slim but comfortable nose and tail handles, D-rings, a RAM mount style fixing for accessories, and a bungee system for easy storage on the water.

The bottom of the boards is designed for speed and minimal drag, with a hard plastic PVC strip around the tail (Speed Tail) to enhance water flow. The boards include standard 9″ fins, which are fully recyclable, and a central US fin box for reduced drag.

The materials and construction process of Red Paddle Co boards utilize an internal core of drop-stitch and MSL technology for strength and lightness. The Sport Plus range introduces MSL 800, a lighter material that maintains stiffness and durability while reducing weight.

Despite not using welded rails, Red Paddle Co maintains a low warranty rate, focusing on manufacturing quality and environmental responsibility as a B Corp certified corporation.

Inflating the boards is straightforward with the Titan pump, and RSS Battens can be inserted for added stiffness. The boards offer good stability and tracking, with the 14′ board providing more glide and speed than the 12’6″ board, which offers more maneuverability.

Deflection tests show both boards maintain stiffness under weight, with minimal differences between using RSS Battens and without. This indicates that Red Paddle Co’s materials and construction techniques effectively balance stiffness and weight.

Who should consider the Sport Plus range? The 12’6″ board is ideal for mid to lighter weight paddlers seeking a balance of speed and stability, while the 14′ board is tailored for those looking to paddle further and faster with a focus on touring and racing.

Pros include the high-quality finish, versatile package options, and excellent paddling performance. The only con is that the lighter material may require more careful handling to maintain longevity.

In summary, the Red Paddle Co Sport+ range offers top-end quality boards for serious paddlers, with thoughtful designs that cater to environmental sustainability and paddler needs.
