Is your child looking for a new hobby to try this summer? Or maybe, as the parent or guardian, you want to get them outside more with a fun activity? Stand-up paddle boarding is a great activity for kids to learn and experiment with. If you’re considering this activity for your children, keep reading to see how it can benefit them!

Get Outdoors and Enjoy Nature

Technology is all around us. Children get sucked into watching videos or playing video games on their tablets. Even as adults, we’re guilty of it too. While your child might be perfectly happy playing video games all day, getting them outside and enjoying nature is essential. Playing outside promotes development, curiosity, critical thinking, and much more. Paddle boarding is a beginner and kid-friendly sport that nearly anyone can participate in; why not give it a try for more outdoor time?

Move Their Body and Exercise

Exercise is crucial to your child’s development. On average, a child should get around one hour of exercise daily. When your child exercises, they can improve their cardiovascular health, build strong muscles and bones, and reduce symptoms of anxiety or depression. SUP is a great way to integrate this physical activity without your child even realizing they’re being active.

Socialize With Others

Going back to our addiction to technology, constantly playing on a tablet or scrolling on the phone can isolate your child. It’s essential that they engage with their peers and socialize to develop self-esteem, create connections, and build resilience. You might not see everyone and their mother on the water, but you might pass by someone kayaking or other kids playing. This provides your child with the perfect opportunity to converse and make friends.

What Age Can Kids Start Paddle Boarding?

There is no hard age limit to when your child can start their journey into paddle boarding. Ultimately, it’s up to you. However, if your child is under 5-6, you should accompany them on the board. After this age, if they’re comfortable paddling by themselves, they can. Please note that your child should always wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket or personal flotation device to ensure their safety.
