A recent report by the Outdoor Foundation has presented results about how and why people participate in outdoor activities. This 2013 report features statistics from 2012 and showed that stand up paddle boarding was the fastest growing sport with 56% or participants doing it for the first time.
Now though, we have our hands on their preliminary 2013 statistics report, which can be found here. It confirms the booming nature of the sport.
They introduce the findings here:
“A record number of Americans participated in at least one outdoor activity in 2013 with nearly 50 percent of all Americans ages six and older enjoying the outdoors. That percentage equates to 142.6 million American outdoor participants.”
Stand up paddle boarding has now been featured in the report for 4 years running, itself confirming that stand up paddle boarding is growing quickly and well.
Their findings are that stand up paddle boarding has grown 29% over the last year. This 1 year change is the biggest increase of all sports, but in second by only 1% is Kayak Fishing and then in 3rd place is White Water Kayaking. Both very closely related to niche sections of the greater SUP marketplace.
Participation numbers for SUP have doubled since they started including SUP. Up from 1 million in 2010 to 2 million in 2013.
All in all it sounds likes SUP is not only here to stay, but growing steadily.
